New Delhi: Following reports from various users claiming they could access TikTok's website, government officials clarified on Friday that the ban on the widely-used Chinese video-sharing platform is still in place.
Officials stated, "The Government of India has not issued any order to unblock TikTok. Any claims to the contrary are false and misleading."
While some users mentioned they could reach the website, they faced difficulties logging in or viewing content. Additionally, the TikTok application remains unavailable on app stores.
In 2020, India prohibited 59 Chinese applications, including TikTok, WeChat, and Helo, citing concerns over national sovereignty and security following the Galwan Valley clashes.
The majority of these applications were flagged by intelligence agencies due to fears they were gathering user data and potentially transmitting it abroad.
The government emphasized that these applications were involved in activities detrimental to India's sovereignty, integrity, defense, security, and public order.
Nevertheless, India and China have recently taken positive steps to improve their relationship, including the resumption of border trade at three designated points: Lipulekh Pass, Shipki La Pass, and Nathu La Pass.
Both nations have also agreed to restore direct flight connections between the Chinese mainland and India as soon as possible and to finalize an updated Air Services Agreement. They have also committed to facilitating visas for tourists, businesses, media, and other visitors traveling in both directions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit China from August 31 to September 1 to participate in the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin. During the summit, he is anticipated to engage in bilateral discussions with several attending leaders.
